Determining the radium concentration in vegetables and fruits in Al-Najaf, Iraq

Amount of pollution radiation in foodstuffs and feedstuffs are very necessary to measure because it is a direct contact with human animal health. Therefore, the present investigation useful for health environmental data base. The study included measurement effective radium-226 content (CRa) some chosen samples vegetables fruits (local imported) Najaf governorate. CRa were measured using Solid State Nuclear Track Detectors (LR-115 Type II). Also, annual dose (AED) associated exposure due intake 226Ra calculated from ingestion adults. results revealed that average value was 3.98±1.08 Bq/kg 1.73±0.11 Bq/kg, respectively. While, AED (mSv/y) 0.067±0.018 0.082±0.005, showed consumption larger than vegetables, but result not significant. All studied had been compared worldwide reported (median). Accordingly, found all findings lower recommended limits UNSCEAR 2000. Finally, based on investigations, no risk expected when considering eating Al-Najaf Iraq.
